“Do you hear that?” Echao whispered.

Tamm’s eyes opened, and he peered around, not daring to move. “I don’t hear anything.”

“Someone’s moving around. Do you think the soldiers got loose?”

Tamm tightened his grip on the sword handle and strained to hear. Only crickets chirping. Then he heard it. It was faint, a shuffling in the grass. Someone was moving closer to them. It was not coming from the road, though. It was coming from the direction of the forest. The soldiers must have seen where they set up camp and moved in while they slept, trying to flank them.

Tamm leaned toward Echao so he could hear his whispers. “I hear it. Be ready to defend yourself.”

The sound moved closer and was only a few paces away when Tamm leaped to his feet, drawing the sword in one swift motion while waving his free arm in a circle above his head. He fed the words with power, and a ring of fire encircled him and Echao. The light illuminated three figures walking toward them. One had a curved blade held out. Another had a bow drawn back to its ear, itching to let the arrow fly. The third led the way, a cowl hiding the face, but walking with an ornate staff tapping the ground with each cautious step.

Tamm held his sword at the ready as the beings approached the ring of fire. They halted just outside of the flames before the one in the middle pointed the tip of the staff at the flames, and they lowered, allowing it to walk into the circle.

Tamm was in awe that the mage was able to control his spell. Linsyn had never taught him that spells could be countered or controlled by another mage, but this mage did it effortlessly.

The figure strode within paces of Tamm but did not say a word, face shielded by the cowl. Echao cleared his throat to get Tamm’s attention. “They’re elves, Tamm. Look at the ears of the two in the back.” Tamm looked past the mage warily and saw the pointed ears of the elves holding the sword and bow.

“What do we do?” Echao asked. “Legends say they’re powerful.”

Tamm did not take his eyes from the mage in front of him. He tilted his head, trying to get a look at its face. He still held the sword out in front of him, ready to strike if needed. “What do you want?”

The mage took a step closer. Tamm wanted to back away but did not want to appear weak. He puffed his chest out. “What do you want?”

It took another step closer until he could hear it breathing. An aroma drifted from it, something calming. Pine needles and flowers? It reminded him of home and wandering in the woods. “Greetings, Tammuz,” it said in a sing-song voice.

It was female, or at least Tamm assumed it was from the tone of the voice. He had never met an elf and did not know if they all spoke in such soft, sweet tones.
